Technology Tools

Moodle: I really liked using this software because it allows communication between teacher and student in and out of class. I think it is a great way to monitor progress in class and it also gives a breakdown on grading and overall activities and assignments that should be completed by the end of the course. I like this tool because I know what I have done and what grade I received for that particular assignment and it also entails what I have not done. Overall rating: 5

FireFox: I found FireFox to be easy to use; I did not have problems navigating through sites nor was the language any different than any other internet gateways. It was easy to control and navigate through various tabs or windows. Overall rating: 5

Del.icio.us: This tool was okay to use. There was nothing on this site that caught my eye. It is plain and simple to use, but all in all it was basically a site that tags websites or articles, and stores it online for future use. It is much similar to book marking, but this site also informs you on how many people have tagged this site and allows you to network with other people and share tags. I found this website difficult to use on campus because all the logging in I had to do, but it was easier to work on tagging at home. The language was simple and easy to understand and there were no technical terms to learn. Overall rating: 3

Google suites (gmail, interactive docs, Blogger, Google Pages): Google was user friendly and easy to learn. Although in order to use any tool offered by Google you needed to have a Gmail account. So, I had to apply for an account with Gmail in order to access any of the online tools such as the Blogger and Google Pages. The language is easy to understand, but in order understand how the sites work; you would have to play around with the buttons and explore what it can or cannot do. I also encountered a few problems with Google Pages, which caused so much stress. I found these tools to be okay. Overall Rating: 3

BricaBox: This tool is not user friendly. I found this website hard to follow and understand. When logged on the website, it is overwhelming, and it also has a lot of things going on, on the home page which can be very uninviting. When I visited the site for the first time I did not know how to navigate my way around the site. The language is simple but it does not entail much. Overall Rating: 2

Protopage: I had fun using this page. It is easy to use and the language to make a webpage is not hard to follow. It has many accessories that can be put onto a page and can be customized to your liking. This page is a great way for a student to make notes for themselves, to do lists that they can follow, and email updates. It is a creative way to convert a “manual” daily planner and convert it to be online. Overall Rating: 5

SlideShare: This tech tool was interesting. I did not know that this was available online. This site is available to anyone and easy to use. It is free to sign up, allows anyone to upload slide shows from PowerPoint or keynote and it converts the slides for you. It even gives you the option whether or not to share your slide shows with others. Overall rating: 5

Diigo: I did not really like this site. I found it rather difficult to use and navigate through. However this application is free of charge and all you got to do is sign up. It allows you to bookmark websites. Overall rating: 2

http://www.jstor.org/stable/2668196
By: Serge Madhere

The journal article entitled, Cultural Diversity, Pedagogy, and Assessment Strategies, discussed the academic performances of students of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds (white to non-white students as stated in the article.) Ogbu’s thesis stated that the academic success of a group is based on the ideals of the minority. Ogbu’s theory explains the differences in achievements in three groups. These three groups were assessed on their achievements by their ideals as a culture and minority. Although most people are monolingual when it comes to social context, bilingual speakers also learn the rules of their second language in which they code switch in different situations

Adapting to Diversity: Organizational Influences on Student Achievement
http://www.jstor.org/stable/1981973
By: Richard C. Richardson, Jr. and Elizabeth Fisk Skinner

The journal by Richardson and Skinner focused on the topic of achievement and participation rates in minorities such as African Americans, Hispanic, and Native Americans (American Indians). The researchers also focused on the problem within the educational system to help the students adapt to change of ways and environment. This was difficult because minorities such as the one said earlier, these groups of people were thought to be inferior to the majority. These changes were rather difficult because of the hesitation to change ways and to accommodate diversity.

Although psychology has a lot to offer to the reforms from the sociologist’s point of view they believe they have much to offer to school reforms as far as its practices, approaches and theories. this research was done over a ten year span with the observation of family involvement with student’s education and the overall community involvement and the success of the student’s.

The article stated that population of speakers of other languages (English not primary language) rose in recent years. The linguistic minority raised more in some states such as: Florida, Arizona, California, Texas, New Mexico, New York and Colorado. A/A Technology

* Why must lesson plans be revised to include disabled students? Discuss whether or not you agree.
Lesson plans should be revised to accommodate and include students with disabilities because first and foremost, they are students and they should be included into the lesson, not excluded. These students may not progress and learn as quickly as the majority but it does not mean they should not be included into the lesson. Although it will take a little longer to plan and to try and accommodate their needs, it is worth the hard work.
I agree fully with revising a lesson to include disabled students. It is going to be hard for the teacher to adjust according to the needs however it should not be an issue whether or not they should be included, it should be known that they are in fact students and the lesson should be focused in accommodating such needs.
