I: Analyze Learners
A. General CharacteristicsThe Lesson is planned for 15 ESL 10th grade students. The class consists of 8 males and 7 females. These students come from a diverse background. The class consists of 7 Chuukese, 2 Filipinos, 3 Yapese, 1 Palauan, and 2 Marshallese.
B. Entry Competencies: Students are able to read, write and speak in simple to intermediates English sentences. All students are at the 8th -9th grade level in regards to reading and writing. Students are able to understand sentence structures and phrases.
C. The students demonstrate little interest when given individual seat work or routine work. However, students are highly motivated more when it comes to working in groups. Students' participation level is at a high.
II: State Objectives
A. ESL 10th grade students will be able to do and understand the concept of syntactic trees that will help with sentence structures and comprehension of noun and verb phrases and its place in sentences.
B. 10th grade students will be able to breakdown simple sentences into syntactic trees. They will understand different phrases and its position in a sentence. They will do this with 85% accuracy.
C. Students will be able to use Microsoft word software to generate syntactic trees.
III: Select instructional methods, media, and materials
A. Methods: Guided instruction, scaffolding, and open ended question. Methods will be used through out the lesson.
B. Media and Materials: Computer, Microsoft Word, Pencil, and Paper.- Student will use the Computer for the generation of the syntactic trees.
- The students will use paper and paper to do a breakdown of sentences then transfer it onto a word document.
IV: Utilize media and materials
A. Preview Materials - Teacher must make sure that the computers and program (Microsoft Word) is working properly.
B. Prepare Materials: - The teacher will inform the students of the lesson a week before they begin.- The teacher will make sure that students understand simple sentences and its function before moving onto more complex sentences.
C. Prepare Environment: - Desks will be arranged in rows of three, with the laptop and projector in the center of the classroom with the theater screen on the board. Other computers will be against the wall in the back of the room.
D. Prepare Learners: - This lesson is apart of a two week unit on sentence structures and functions.- The students will be informed of the lesson one week prior.- Review of noun and verb phrases, prepositions, determiners, etc…
- Review rules and procedures of MS word.
o Practice with different sentences from simple to complex.
o Students will practice generating tree on MS word.
E. Provide the learning Experience: - The teacher will provide open ended questions to generate prior knowledge.
V: Require learner participation
A) Practice: Allow the students to get acquainted with the instructional materials;-The instructor will demonstrate how to use the MS word program.-Using the overhead projector, the instructor will demonstrate how to create a syntactic tree with MS word.
B) Do: practice activities- The students will need to work on sentences and the breakdown to get used to using syntactic trees.
C) Feedback:
- The students will discuss and give their opinion about sentence structures and the functions of a sentence.
- Ask questions/provide feedback.
VI: Evaluate and revise
A) Assessment of learner achievement: Students will be assessed based on how well they understand sentence structures. They will be assessed on how well they understand the content and the generation of their syntactic trees.
B) Evaluation of media and methods: Evaluating the computers as our choice of media depends on whether the computers have any fluctuations or power outages which will disrupt the completion of the lesson.
C) Evaluation of instructor/instruction: The teacher's evaluation will be based on the preparation of the lesson as well as providing “Plan B(s)” should the media fail.
D) Revise: The revision to this lesson plan will be produced by the teacher which will include an alternate media or tool should the teacher encounter technical difficulties
